Freddy’s Petate Portrait

I’ve been wanting to do a series of portraits using a petate as background. Petates are bedrolls woven with the fibers of the petate palm. Allthough they are used for sleeping, they are equally usefull at the beach, or in my case, as backdrops. I’ve fastened mine to a backdrop stand using clamps. Behind it, another backdrop stand with black fabric helps to produce a completely black background. Eliminating the clamps and the backdrop stand is a no-brainer using Photoshop. I’m not sure if I like the sepia-toned one, or the slightly muted colored one best. What do you think?
He querido hacer una serie de retratos usando un petate como fondo. Los petates están hechos con fibras de la palma del petate. Y aunque se usan para dormir, también se pueden usar en la playa, o en mi caso, como fondos. Utilizé un par de pinzas para colgar el mío en un tubo. Atrás del petate cuelga otro tubo con tela negra para crear el color del fondo. Eliminar las pinzas y el tubo fue sencillo con Photoshop. No estoy seguro si me gusta más la versión sepia, o la que tiene los colores un tanto apagados. ¿Tú qué opinas?
Victor Poses for Casa Cupula

Casa Cupula is wrapping up finishing touches for their brand new website and I’m thrilled to see some of my images be a part of this project. Since L’Occitane, the renowned brand of skin care, is part of the amenities offered at this swanky gay hotel, we wanted to highlight this through photography. Yes, a beautiful product shot is forthcoming. But in the mean time, we couldn’t resist getting Victor all oiled up to demonstrate how the products are applied!
Casa Cupula está a punto de colocar los últimos detalles en su nuevo sitio web y me da muchísimo gusto ver varias de mis imágenes formar parte del proyecto. La conocida marca de productos para la piel L’Occitane es una de las amenidades en este elegante hotel gay y queríamos mostrarla a través de fotos. Después, habrá una linda imágen de los productos. Pero mientras tanto, ¡no pudimos resistir frotar aceite en el cuerpo de Victor para que nos demostrara cómo se aplican los productos!
Backlighting Jacobo

I have a love-hate relationship with back-lighting. And this may be the reason why it’s taken me so long to upload these images of my dear friend and choreographer Jacobo Martínez, whom I’ve photographed several times before.
Amo y odio al mismo tiempo el hacer imágenes iluminadas por atrás. Tal vez ésa es la razón por la que me ha tomado tanto tiempo el suber estas imágenes de mi querido amigo y coreógrafo Jacobo Martínez, a quien he fotografiado en varias ocasiones.

Jumping with Jacobo and Co.

I had another opportunity to capture my dear friend and choreographer Jacobo Martínez and his dance troupe (plus a few drag queens and a pop opera singing diva thrown into the mix!). While the ladies were changing outfits, we decided to do a little bit of jumping around. It was a pleasure to work at Paco Paco’s new Ranch space on the rooftop. Thanks to manager Benito’s generosity, we were able to truly take advantage of the space and create some fun shots, most of which were lit with a large, octagonal box suspended from the ceiling, and a smaller, rectangular one aiming forward at the dancers to bring up their eyes (they wear so much makeup, it can be tricky when your key light is coming from above them!).
Tuve otra oportunidad de capturar a mi querido amigo, el coreógrafo Jacobo Martínez, con su compañía de dance (¡y también a dos que tres dragas y una diva que canta opera pop!). Mientras las damas se cambiaban, decidimos hacer dos que tres brinquitos. Fue un placer trabajar en el nuevo espacio Ranch de Paco Paco. Gracias a la amabilidad de Benito, el gerente, pudimos aprovechar la amplitud del lugar y hacer una variedad de tomas divertidísimas. Casi todas fueron iluminadas con una gran caja octagonal suspendida del techo, y una más pequeña, rectangular, posicionada al frente del set, para iluminar sus ojos. ¡Generalmente usan tanto maquillaje que es todo un reto crear destellos en sus ojos cuando la luz principal viene de arriba!
